Ablation therapy is used to treat patients with palpitation due to specific abnormalities of heart rhythm.
Ablation therapy requires admission to hospital for a procedure under local anaesthetic and sedation and attempts are made to stimulate the abnormal heart rhythm by placing a number of wires in the heart. The wires (catheters) are passed to the heart using veins in the groin and under the collarbone. If this is successful it may be possible to burn away part of the lining of the heart using techniques such as radio frequency or cryoablation. In many patients this is very successful and curative.
Electrophysiology Study - Electrodes catheters are placed in the heart to study the cardiac electrical system. This may be necessary in patients with palpitation.
