Blood Test - A patient having blood tests.
JPEG (17 kb)
Cardiac Catheterisation Lab - This is a typical layout of the room where coronary angiography, coronary balloon angioplasty and pacemaker implants are carried out.
JPEG (24 kb)
Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery - Coronary artery surgery usually requires the heart to be exposed by splitting the breastbone so the surgeon can operate.
JPEG (35 kb)
CT Coronary Angiogram - CT scanning can be used to create images of the heart arteries.
JPEG (28 kb)
Echocardiogram - This is a sophisticated ultrasound machine that can provide detailed information about the heart. It is safe and not uncomfortable.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) - An ECG records the electrical activity of the heart and can provide a lot of helpful information to help make a diagnosis.
JPEG (29 kb)
Electrophysiology Study - Electrodes catheters are placed in the heart to study the cardiac electrical system. This may be necessary in patients with palpitation.

Exercise Treadmill Room - Typical layout of an exercise treadmill room. This test is used in the assessment of chest pain.
JPEG (33 kb)
Implantable Loop Recorder - This small device can be placed under the skin on the left side of the chest to record the heart rhythm.
JPEG (37 kb)
Measuring Blood Pressure - Blood pressure is being recorded using a cuff and stethoscope.
JPEG (23 kb)
Myocardial Perfusion Imaging - It is possible to assess blood flow to the heart using a nuclear tracer (radioisotope) injected into a vein. It is a very safe test.
JPEG (68 kb)
Pacemaker - A pacemaker consists of a battery (generator) connected to insulated electrical leads that are passed through a large vein to the heart.
JPEG (30 kb)
Pacemaker Chest X-Ray - This shows the position of a pacemaker in the chest.
JPEG (20 kb)
Stent - A stent is a metal mesh-like scaffold that is used in coronary balloon angioplasty to hold the artery open.
JPEG (37 kb)
Transoesophageal Echocardiogram (TOE) - A special type of examination that gives very clear images of certain parts of the heart by placing an ultrasound probe in the gullet.

Angioplasty Step 2 - A wire is passed down the artery and stent positioned across narrowing.
Flash video (276 kb)
Angioplasty Step 3 - Stent is expanded by inflating the balloon.
Flash video (69 kb)
Angioplasty Step 4 - Balloon is removed leaving stent in place. Artery is no longer narrowed.
